When we face difficult situations in our lives, our reactions may vary depending on whether we are a child, an adolescent, or an adult. How do we acquire the knowledge and resources that allow us to act in the most appropriate way?

As we go through life, we receive insight and advice from our family members, teachers, friends, and those we work with. If we learn from these experiences, we can use this knowledge to handle different moments in our lives. Think of these moments like slips of paper in a magic box. We can reach in and use them when we need to.

When we successfully use our past to help us learn how to respond and adapt, we can better achieve our goals. Moments of balance like this allow us to feel happiness and satisfaction. When things do not turn out how we wanted, we can still learn from those experiences, allowing us to be better prepared for future difficulties.

Circumstances determined your past, the present is embracing you, and only you can define your future.

However, sometimes our previous life circumstances did not provide the best learning environment. When you think back to the magic box, perhaps these slips are torn or hard to read. These experiences did not give us the knowledge to make better decisions. Instead, we feel indecision, doubt, and even anguish. We feel like it’s too late to start or too hard to keep going.

The good news is that it is never too late to start walking in a different direction, even if it feels like all the paper in your box is crumpled and useless. Even if we don’t realise it, we have resources and ways to pull ourselves back on track.

Therapy gives us permission to move forward and forgive the past. It allows us to sift through the baggage and find hidden strengths within ourselves.

It may be painful to suddenly become aware of deficiencies in your life, whether they are personal or work-related. We all can learn to recognise our abilities and turn possibilities into something impressive and worthy of our efforts. It is possible to shift the course of your life and reach your dreams, but only if we make purposeful strides in that direction.
